Beat Convention Fatigue with These Top 5 Hiking and Biking Trails in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is known for its vibrant nightlife, high-energy entertainment, and, of course, its world-class conventions. If you’re one of the thousands attending a conference or business event in the city, you’re probably gearing up for long days of networking, presentations, and meetings. But let’s face it—after hours of sitting and listening, your body might be craving a change of pace. Enter Las Vegas’s natural beauty, which can provide the perfect antidote to convention fatigue.

While the Strip offers plenty of excitement, the nearby desert landscape offers a peaceful escape way beyond slot machines that can help you recharge. Hiking and biking are excellent ways to break up your convention schedule, and with an abundance of nearby trails, it’s easier than you might think to fit a quick outdoor adventure into your trip. Here’s how to survive your Las Vegas convention with the help of some of the best local trails for hiking and biking.

1. Start Your Day with a Sunrise Hike

You’re in the city that never sleeps, but that doesn’t mean you need to burn the candle at both ends. Before your convention schedule kicks into full gear, why not rise early and take advantage of the cooler morning hours? A morning hike can set a positive tone for your day and help you feel energized for the sessions ahead.

Recommended Trail: Red Rock Canyon (Calico Tanks Trail)

Just 15 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, Red Rock Canyon offers some of the most scenic and easily accessible hiking trails. The Calico Tanks Trail is a short but rewarding hike that takes you to a series of natural rock formations and provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape. The trail is only about 2.5 miles round-trip and is perfect for a quick morning adventure before heading to the convention center.

Tip: Highly recommend downloading all trails app for the best directions and updates. Las Vegas can be unbearably hot in the summer months. For optimal hiking conditions, get on the trail by sunrise. During the winter months a nice mid-day or afternoon start is great to optimize the sunshine and chilly mornings.

2. Take a Mid-Day Break on a Quick Bike Ride

Long sessions and back-to-back meetings can make you feel a bit claustrophobic. If you’re looking to stretch your legs and get the blood flowing during your lunch break, consider taking a quick bike ride. Many of the local trails are located just outside the city, making them easy to reach without taking up too much of your precious convention time.

Recommended Trail: Mesa Park

Mesa Park is a relatively flat and easy-to-ride path that runs along a cozy residential natural area against a mountain side. Follow the sidewalk northwest to a wide sidewalk that offers scenic views of the desert landscape and local wildlife, making it a perfect option for a quick ride. It’s also located not far from the city, so you can easily bike to the trailhead, enjoy the ride, and get back in time for your afternoon sessions.

Tip: Rent a bike from Las Vegas Cyclery located off 215/Town Center or the Trek Bicycle shop located in Blue Diamond. Make sure to call ahead and make a reservation to secure the right size bike as these shops are busy year-round.

3. Take Advantage of Evening Trails for Stress Relief

After a long day at the convention, the last thing you might want to do is head straight back to your hotel room. Instead, head outdoors and let the desert’s natural beauty and amazing sunsets help you unwind. Whether you prefer hiking or biking, an evening adventure can help you clear your mind and de-stress before returning to your convention duties.

Recommended Trail: Blue Diamond / Late Night or Spanish Trail (Beginner or Intermediate Loops)

If you enjoy mountain biking, the trails at Blue Diamond are a must-ride. Located about 30 minutes from the Strip, it’s known for its world class cross-country trails, native burros, abandoned vintage cars from the bootlegger days and amazing views of Red Rock. However, there are also beginner-friendly loops perfect for unwinding after a busy day. The beginner loops are late night and Spanish trail, featuring smooth singletrack and beautiful views of Red Rock, allowing you to get a bit of exercise without being too strenuous.

If you prefer hiking, there are plenty of scenic trails around the canyon that offer beautiful desert views. Flower Power offers great views and some elevation and is relatively short but offers a peaceful retreat from the city.

Tip: Always check the weather conditions before heading out—desert temperatures can fluctuate wildly, so dressing in layers is key. Always take a Camel Pak with water, a first aid-kit, a map of the area and tell someone where you are or share your location. In the summer months there are rattle snake warnings, so tread with awareness.

4. Explore Beyond the Strip with a Scenic Day Trip

If you’ve got a full day off between sessions or have a long evening free, take a scenic day trip to explore one of the more remote hiking or biking areas near Las Vegas. These destinations will help you escape the hustle and bustle of the Strip while still being close enough to enjoy a full day of adventure.

Recommended Trail: Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail (Lake Mead Recreational Area)

For a more rugged experience, head to Lake Mead’s Railroad Tunnel Trail. A hidden gem, this area offers exceptional views of the lake and surrounding mountains, wildflowers, potential spotting of the local big horn sheep and more. The best feature this trail offers is the tunnels that house bats and historical markers along this outdoor stroll.

Tip: If you’re going for a longer day trip, make sure to pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and snacks. Cell phone reception is spotty in some areas. Parking is limited in this area, so plan accordingly.

5. Recommended Trail: Kraft Mountain Loop

This sandstone colorful trail features a great combo of elevation and rock scrambling. Perfect for taking pictures, releasing all your frustrations and gaining beautiful views. You will see groups of climbers, as the sandstone is a great place to free climb.

If you’re serious about fitting outdoor adventure into your convention schedule, planning is key. Take a look at your convention agenda and carve out windows for outdoor activity. Early mornings, lunch breaks, and evening hours are your best bet. You can even connect with other attendees who share your interest in the outdoors and create a group to explore the local trails together.
